Chicagoland’s weather can be volatile. Along with the greening lawns, tulips, daffodils and magnolia blossoms, come windstorms, thunderstorms and hail storms. Along with the storms come “Storm Chasers” – out-of-towners who are interested in making a quick buck. “Storm Chasers” will often do all they can to look like they belong in your community. They may get a local address or they may even buy a company name from an older company. They may show up at your house saying they were sent by your previous contractor, or even by the manufacturer of your roofing. They use high pressure tactics that are meant to close a sale quickly.

Here are some things you can do to protect yourself:

• Ask to see proof of insurance and state license.
• Don’t pay for the entire job up front, and pay with a credit card, or check.
• Don’t settle for an oral agreement over any work needed.
• Everything should be documented clearly, in writing.
