Cedar Shakes

Cedar shakes and shingles have a special warmth and elegance, an architectural look that states classic quality, taste and timelessness.  Aside from their aesthetic value, products are lightweight, as well as wind and impact resistant.  Western Red Cedar withstands serious freeze/thaw cycles and its natural oils resist decay.  Cedar is one of the only renewable roofing products on the market today.  A truly green product that has a high R value to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  All of our cedar products are approved by the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau. All of our cedar products can be treated to retard either moss or fire.

When deciding on which type of cedar would be great for your roof, you can choose between a few different cuts of wood and two different colors.  The cedar can be hand split, tapersawn, cut into perfections, or perfect shake and comes in either Western Red Cedar or Alaskan Yellow Cedar.  The main difference between the two, other than color, is that the Alaskan Yellow is heavier and more dense than the Western Red. Explore the different types below!

Handsplit

These shakes have split faces and sawn backs.  This style of shake is the most popular and gives a textured look that can’t be duplicated by imitation products. Medium shakes are made from Premium Grade Western red Cedar with a length of 18″ and thickness of 1/2″. Heavy shakes are made from Number 1 Grade Western red Cedar with a length of 24″ and thickness of 3/4″

Tapersawns

These shakes are sawn on both sides.  Premium grade is the most common, this will ensure the product is 100% edge grain, 100% clear, and 100% heartwood.  These shakes are for people that want a smooth uniform look on the roof but still have some thickness to the shake.  These shakes come at a length of either 18″ (7.5″ exposure) or 24″ (10″ exposure) and with a thickness of either 5/8″ or 7/8″

Perfections

Perfection shakes are a type of smooth sawn,  architecturally uniform cedar shingle is preferred for its natural and tailored appearance and is used on traditional, modern, and non-residential structures.  This product is used on roofs and sidewalls.  These shingles have a length of 18″ (5.5″ exposure) and a thickness of 3/8″.
